Alphabet Island

We were so excited to start Alphabet Island this month!! X has been really interested in the ocean and pirates lately, so it’s a great fit!

From pirate fun to boat science we’ve splashed and Arrrgh-ed our way through so much learning already! The Make and Play spy glass and eye patch were huge hits.

As always, the boys LOVE our manipulatives this month! It was so neat how Mother Goose Time suggested we use our foam numbers as islands for Day 1! This fun activity was expanded even further by adding a math game element. X would roll a number one the cube dice and fish out that number island. We even were able to do a little adding!

Q has been loving puzzles lately, so he really enjoyed connecting the letters and numbers.

X spent quite some time experimenting with what his boat could hold and what would make it sink. I loved the ease of creating a tinfoil boat as suggested by our Science Experiment card. Design and physics concepts at work in preschool learning! He also explored balancing items in the boat which could result in making it flip. I use any opportunity I can to bring our school into our play, especially outside, and our Day 2: Boat unit did this perfectly!

Learning Through Music and Corresponding Activities

One of our favorite parts of our Mother Goose Time curriculum each month is the cd. Every month a full length cd is included with learning songs based around the monthly theme. These aren’t your standard kids songs either, they pull from a HUGE variety of genres to compose these one of a kind songs. Activities and dances are included within the curriculum through out the month to highlight these songs.

Then once the month is over, these cds go straight into our car. I love knowing that my kids can enjoying learning concepts while we drive and the songs are so catchy that I have many favorites on each album.

This month, like any other, X requested to listen to the new cd as soon as the box arrived. We frequently listen during meals, thus lunch time both kids were dancing as they ate. X particularly loved a song called Cow in My House and asked for that one to be repeated a few times. The silly plot of the song had him in giggles.

So later that night I was looking through the provided materials and was so excited to discover that this month’s included story book is based on the song!

To integrate the learning opportunities even further, this month’s included puzzle is ALSO based on the fun song!

I really love having so many different materials based around one topic. This gives X a chance to keep on thinking about what we’re learning while utilizing different skills. I’m so excited to see how awesome this is for reading comprehension. Listening to the story, hearing the song and using the puzzle will have him so immersed in this story! Music, literacy and math all surrounding this one silly cow! He’s going to love it.

Make sure to check back in through out the month as we go Down on the Farm with Mother Goose Time!

Self Portrait

Today is our first day of MGT Art Studio and boy was it a success!!

X was immediately drawn to matching our daily job shapes to their correct spots on our poster. He was enthralled with the idea of earning his Fly Dollars which really helped keep him focused as we moved through lessons. He excitedly removed each shape as we finished that lesson and announced how many more “jobs” we had to do before he got paid. He listened so intently as we read Falco the Featherless Bird and learned about our first value: Discipline.

The highlight for me today was watching him create his self portrait. I arranged a large mirror in front of his table so he could look up for reference.

He’d study his face and then explain what he was drawing, why he chose that specific color and what shape he was using to represent the feature. This was the most self directed he’s ever been with a project and he is so proud of the outcome. I love seeing pride blossom in his young soul and, if I do say so myself, he did a pretty amazing job!

He also enjoyed our finger play for today. A fun little rhyme with hand motions about painting portraits. Often times it’s difficult to get him to participate in the songs and dances. Perhaps the confidence boost from his self portrait brought him out of his she’ll a little bit!

Lastly we worked on sizing from smallest to largest. X has been doing this successfully for quite a while, but I always love reviewing. So we discussed which continents were which, that we were learning about Europe this month, and which continent was North America. After I labeled the pieces of paper with the corresponding continents he decided to draw the land masses on them for me and did a little “writing” of his own.

This has been our most successful day of school yet, and that’s saying a lot because X loves school! We’really really digging the setup for this month and I LOVE that there is almost no setup for these awesome activities!

We can’t wait for more artistic fun tomorrow!
